T is for Tabletop Games

In today’s continuation of the A-Z Challenge, I give you:

T is for Tabletop Games

If you’ve been following this site regularly, today’s topic shouldn’t be much of a surprise at all as I write a weekly column reviewing tabletop games. I spend my weekend playing tabletop games with my husband and friends–that is, when I’m not console gaming.

Tabletop games are more than simple ways to pass the time. For me, they force me to think and strategize, to solve puzzles, and to genuinely have fun with folks I don’t see nearly often enough.

Tabletop games come in a variety of mechanic types: from deck builders and resource management, to city-building, area movement, and dice rolling. My favorites are typically deck builders, especially games like Dominion, Ascension, and Legendary. We’ve even got the Resident Evil deck building game, though we haven’t tried it yet.

Our love of deck builders began with Dominion. We actually have this wooden case to hold all of the base set and expansion cards:

Dominion card boxSince my father is very handy with woodworking, we’ve considered getting him to make us one of these Dominion lazy-Susan’s to make playing easier. Bonus if it works with other deck builders!

Lazy Susan for DominionI think what I enjoy most about deck builders is that every game is different. Which cards get used is randomized each time. Between that and what your opponents do, you have to change your strategy every game. It makes for one hell of a game!

What’s your favorite tabletop game? Anyone else out there a deck builder fan?

This post is part of the A-Z Challenge. Every day (except Sundays) in the month of May, I’ll be posting about people, places, books, games, and other things that influence me as a writer or add a certain magic to my life. Join me in April as we explore a Hodge-Podge of Influences & Wayward Treks through the Fantastical.

  1. Battleship! Used to play it with my siblings all the time. Now it’s harder to find opponents willing to humor me so I turned to the mobile, against-the-computer versions. My favorite so far is Battleship War 3D – love how they incorporated arcade elements without changing too much about the basic rules.

  2. academcka I remember many-a-day as a kid playing Battleship. I was one of those kids who always put my ships in too obvious spots and then resorted to cheating by moving my ships. *sigh* Silly me.

I probably haven’t played it since I was 9 or 10. Never played the electronic version either, but it looks fun!
