I remember the original video game Where in the World is Carmen Sandiago? from back when I was a kid in 1985. I didn’t get to play it in school as our school only had Oregon Trail, but apparently Molli played it a ton. A “deluxe” version was released in 1994, and I didn’t play that one either.

Of course, these games spawned two TV game shows entitled Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, which ran for five seasons in the 90’s and Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?, which ran for two seasons.
It also resulted in a live action & animated TV show called Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?, which I think I might have caught a few episodes of on TV.
I was in high school by then and didn’t have a lot of time for it.
Welcome to the New Sandiego!
I knew little about the IP when Netflix released a new animated television series on it in 2019 and lasted for four seasons, ending in 2020. Apparently there’s also to be a puzzle-adventure game, but we’ll see. Point being, Molli and I were looking for something relaxing and enjoyable to watch and landed recently on this show.
I love that the main character is Latina and the series so far is both educational and complex in its character and plot. Lots of development going around in terms of both. The show is focused on Carmen’s backstory and really dives into it.
I absolutely LOVE the art style in this anime. I doesn’t feel to over-the-top anime style but it’s crisp and sharp in all the right ways. The characters pop against the multicultural backgrounds.
I also love that Carmen’s code name was Black Sheep. Of course I love it.
Her very Robin Hood style of justice is always something I love in a show so of course I am loving this series. It’s not as good as the She-Ra reboot by Dreamworks (which is PERFECT and also on Netflix) but it’s still a stellar show.

We’ve only just begun watching Season 2 so I don’t have too much to comment on but I had to post about it in case anyone else needed something fun and cozy to fill their evenings with.
If we ever get to the point again where going to conventions is safe and doesn’t expose us to a deadly virus, Molli has plans to cosplay Carmen. I think she could totally pull off that red trench coat and hat. <3
P.S. It’s Labor Day in the US but most of what the union labors fought against (children working in coal mines, 7 day work weeks, etc.) is trying to be undone by the GOP. I don’t really feel like “celebrating” that, so I’m going to curl up with cozy media and keep fighting as best I can.
